Recommendations for your new carving!

Placement of your new carving is very important in keeping it looking its best. Moisture collects under the carving were it sits on the ground, so the wood will rout from the bottom up. The best way to provent this is to keep the bottom as dry as possible. If the carving is going to be in the weather on the ground, there is things you can do to keep your bottom as dry as possible. One way is to dig a hole where the carving will be placed, the width of the caving and one foot deep. Put one inch size stone in the hole for the carving to sit on. This will alow rain water to drain under the carving, allowing air to flow and keep the bottom dry.

The carving only needs to be finished once. I put a water bassed finish once it is carved. I do this to keep the moisture as evenly as possible in the uncured log, to keep major crackes from occurring while it drys out. If you would like to keep the color of the wood, you can keep finshing it once a year or it will color like a old barn.

I recommend leaving your new carving outdoors for the first few mounths to alow the wood fibers to ajust. The carving will dry from the outside while the center is still wet, causing the outside wood fibers to twist and the log will crack. We need the carving to dryout as evenly as possible.
